In a shocking incident, Malaka Weeravarnakula, the principal of Hambantota Debokkawa Maha Vidyalaya, assaulted a 12-year-old student, resulting in a severe spinal cord injury.
The incident occurred after the student, who was the class monitor, failed to clean the trash in the classroom. According to witnesses, Principal Weeravarnakula grabbed the student by the ear, dragged him out of the classroom, and delivered two blows to his neck, causing significant damage to the bones in the student’s neck.
The injured student was admitted to Embilipitiya General Hospital, where hospital staff reportedly pressured the student and his guardians, accusing them of fabricating the story to enforce legal action against the principal.
Despite the serious nature of the injuries, the Middeniya Police have treated the complaint as a minor issue. The student’s mother has lodged complaints with multiple authorities, including the Middeniya Police, Zonal Director of Education Tangalla, Child Protection Authority, Children and Women’s Bureau, Police Headquarters, and the Human Rights Commission in Matara, seeking justice for the brutal attack.
