Journalists and Lawyers Unite to Address Human Rights and Legal Issues in Anuradhapura and Kantale

Journalists and legal professionals from Anuradhapura and Kantale have raised concerns over a range of pressing civil and human rights issues, calling for immediate action and reforms.

Anuradhapura: Land Disputes and Legal Aid

At a journalist collective meeting in Anuradhapura, journalists highlighted land-related issues, particularly unauthorized constructions and problems with irrigation channels. Many residents are struggling due to the failure of the Anuradhapura Irrigation Department to properly define protected lands. Nuwara Wewa, a significant reservoir, was cited as an example where encroachments are causing major concerns.

Additionally, journalists pointed out the bureaucratic inefficiencies in the region and emphasized the need to raise awareness through media while collaborating with the Right to Life Human Rights Center.

On the legal front, lawyers discussed the rising number of land disputes and the weaknesses in the government’s mechanisms for resolving them. The need for free legal aid clinics was highlighted, along with a plan to refer cases to the Human Rights Center to provide further legal support for victims.

Kantale: Human Rights Violations and Government Negligence

In Kantale, discussions focused on the lack of human rights advocacy in rural areas. Journalists stressed the importance of building a strong connection between the media and Kantale Human Rights First Aid Centers to address these issues effectively.

A key concern was the failure of the Trincomalee Human Rights Commission, a subsidiary of the national Human Rights Commission, to investigate violations properly. Journalists noted that many Tamil officials within the commission fail to take action on complaints involving Tamil officials, leading to a lack of accountability.

Additionally, the rising drug addiction among young children was flagged as a serious issue, with journalists stating that law enforcement is failing to address it properly. To combat the lack of awareness at the rural level, a proposal was made to conduct workshops on the Right to Information (RTI) Act to help communities obtain necessary information about these issues.

Legal Concerns in Kantale

Lawyers in Kantale discussed the importance of educating children on human rights and proposed a workshop for this purpose. They also raised concerns about the irregularities in the Trincomalee Human Rights Commission and its lack of response to reported violations.

Further, they pointed out police inaction in domestic violence cases and highlighted how the Maintenance Act and the Domestic Violence Act are being misused. Discussions also covered corruption in government offices, including issues related to the actions of the Kantale Regional Secretary at that time.

Call for Immediate Action

Both journalists and lawyers agreed that urgent steps must be taken to address these issues. Strengthening media coverage, providing free legal aid, and improving human rights awareness were identified as key priorities.

With a united effort from the media, legal professionals, and human rights organizations, there is hope for greater justice and accountability in Anuradhapura, Kantale, and beyond.
