During the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Gaurav Kumar Thakur, Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of India, expressed optimism that the forthcoming elections in Sri Lanka would advance the cause of national reconciliation.
Thakur emphasized India’s long-standing commitment to supporting Sri Lanka, particularly since 2009, by aiding in the island nation’s relief, rehabilitation, resettlement, and reconstruction efforts. He highlighted India’s ongoing support, noting that India provided over USD 4 billion in multi-faceted assistance to help Sri Lanka navigate its economic challenges in 2022.
Additionally, Thakur pointed out the close cooperation between India and Sri Lanka in finalizing debt restructuring discussions, reaffirming India’s dedication to strengthening bilateral relations and assisting Sri Lanka in achieving long-term stability.
India’s sustained support demonstrates its commitment as a neighbor and partner to Sri Lanka in this critical period of recovery and reconciliation.
