HRCSL Unveils Four Publications on International Human Rights Day 2024

Colombo, December 10, 2024 – The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) celebrated International Human Rights Day with a special ceremony at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) under the theme “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now.” The event highlighted the importance of addressing pressing human rights challenges while paving the way for a sustainable and inclusive future.

The HRCSL marked the occasion by launching four impactful publications, each targeting critical aspects of human rights in Sri Lanka. These publications reflect the Commission’s commitment to fostering accountability and driving reforms in human rights practices across the country.

Highlights of the Publications

  1. Guidelines and Recommendations
    • Two comprehensive documents offering actionable guidelines and recommendations.
    • Focus areas include the rights of persons with disabilities and safeguarding human rights defenders, addressing gaps in their protection.
  2. Key Recommendations from 2024
    • A compilation of the Commission’s notable recommendations from the past year.
    • This resource outlines HRCSL’s efforts in addressing human rights violations and shaping future standards for improved human rights practices.
  3. Research on “Manpower” Workers in Free Trade Zones
    • Findings from an in-depth study into the working conditions of “manpower” workers in two free trade zones.
    • The publication provides practical recommendations aimed at improving the rights and welfare of this marginalized workforce.

Speaking at the event, HRCSL emphasized the urgency of addressing human rights challenges and strengthening policies to ensure that no one is left behind. The publications aim to serve as both resources for stakeholders and a catalyst for action in promoting and protecting human rights.

These releases reaffirm the HRCSL’s role as a critical advocate for human rights in Sri Lanka, particularly at a time when urgent reforms and protections are needed. The Commission called upon policymakers, civil society, and the public to engage actively in implementing the recommendations outlined in these publications.
