EU Urges Clarity on Sri Lanka’s Truth Commission, Calls for Protection of Civic Space Ahead of Presidential Elections

During the 57th session of the Human Rights Council’s interactive dialogue on the OHCHR report concerning Sri Lanka, the European Union (EU) delivered a statement acknowledging the report on the country’s human rights situation.

The EU acknowledged Sri Lanka’s efforts in tackling the challenges of the past two years, particularly the financial crisis of 2022. It welcomed the ongoing preparations for fair and democratic presidential elections on September 21st and expressed readiness to support the process through an EU election observation mission.

While noting the establishment of the “Commission for Truth, Unity and Reconciliation,” the EU called for greater clarity on its mandate and objectives. The EU also expressed concern about the slow progress in advancing accountability and truth.

Moreover, the EU emphasized the need to protect civic space and stated it would closely monitor the implications of new and proposed laws, such as the “Anti-Terrorism Bill” and the “Online Safety Bill,” especially in relation to freedom of opinion and expression.

The EU urged Sri Lanka to safeguard freedom of expression, ensure full participation of civil society, and make progress in reconciliation and accountability. It also wished the country peaceful and democratic elections.

In conclusion, the EU posed a question to the High Commissioner or Deputy High Commissioner on the necessary steps to ensure the success of the “Commission for Truth, Unity and Reconciliation” in promoting accountability and reconciliation in Sri Lanka.
