Empowering Human Rights Activists: Advanced Training Held in Trincomalee

Trincomalee, August 4, 2024 — In a significant step towards strengthening human rights advocacy, an advanced training program was conducted at Kulakottam Hall for human rights activists associated with the Human Rights First Aid Center in Trincomalee. The program, held on August 4th, aimed to update and enhance the knowledge and skills of human rights defenders, equipping them to face contemporary challenges more effectively.

Real-World Insights Highlight Training Needs

During the program, a participant shared an eye-opening experience. In a recent discussion with a group of police officers, a senior officer stated, “There is no proper way to protect human rights, and there should be no fear regarding related issues.” This statement brought to light a critical gap in understanding and protecting human rights within law enforcement agencies.

The participant emphasized that such training sessions should be extended to police officers and related officials to bridge this gap. This feedback set the tone for the training, underscoring the necessity of widespread human rights education.

Comprehensive Training Modules

The training program covered a range of essential topics:

  1. Role of a Human Rights Activist in the Current Situation: Participants explored the evolving responsibilities of activists in today’s socio-political climate, learning how to adapt and respond to new challenges.
  2. Preparing Affidavits and Written Complaints: The session provided crucial guidelines for drafting affidavits and prosecuting written complaints, ensuring activists are well-equipped to handle legal documentation accurately.
  3. Practical Activities: Engaging, hands-on sessions allowed participants to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios, enhancing their practical skills.
  4. Assisting Victims Effectively: Strategies were discussed for finding positive solutions to challenges encountered while aiding victims at first aid centers, highlighting the importance of compassionate and informed support.

Expert Responses and Empowerment

In response to the senior police officer’s statement, trainers reassured participants that human rights are enshrined in the constitution and that mechanisms, including the police, are in place to protect them. By utilizing these mechanisms correctly, citizens contribute to the broader process of safeguarding human rights. Awareness of the law empowers citizens to practice and uphold their rights in everyday life, fostering a culture of respect and protection.

A Collaborative Effort

The success of the program was largely attributed to the diverse and dynamic team at the Human Rights Center. Their collective expertise and dedication ensured a well-rounded and impactful training experience. The program not only enhanced the knowledge and skills of the participants but also fostered a sense of community and collaboration among activists, officials, and citizens.

Moving Forward

The advanced training program in Trincomalee represents a vital step in the ongoing efforts to empower human rights activists and strengthen the protection of human rights across Sri Lanka. By addressing gaps in understanding and enhancing the capabilities of both activists and officials, the program aims to create a more informed and proactive approach to human rights advocacy.

As the Human Rights First Aid Center continues its mission, such training programs will be crucial in building a robust network of empowered individuals committed to upholding human rights and fundamental freedoms. The center remains dedicated to fostering a culture of respect, awareness, and proactive protection, ensuring that all individual’s rights are recognized and defended.
