COPE blames National Child Protection Authority…

A parliamentary committee has expressed strong displeasure over the work of the National Institute for the Protection of Children in Sri Lanka, where a child is abused every two hours.

National Child Protection aims to formulate a National Policy on the Prevention of Child Abuse and the Protection and Treatment of Children Abused

Although more than two decades have passed since the establishment of the Authority, one of the reasons for this is the delay in the implementation of a national policy.

The Chairperson of the Committee on Public Enterprises, Prof. Charitha Herath, instructed the relevant authorities, including the Secretary to the Ministry of Education at the recent COPE Committee meeting, to expedite the implementation of a national policy which is the primary responsibility of the National Child Protection Authority.

The Committee also emphasized the importance of expeditious implementation of the National Policy which has been approved so far.

It has also been revealed that the National Child Protection Authority has not submitted any annual reports to Parliament for the past four years.

It was also revealed that no annual reports of the Authority for the years 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 have been submitted to Parliament so far.
