Eight inmates were killed, and 43 others were injured in a riot at Mahara Prison last evening (29), Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.
He said that some incidents were reported in the prison this morning (30) and that five police teams and police special task force were working to control the situation
The reman prisoners in Mahara Prison have initially caused unrest in the prison, which has since escalated into a riot., with inmates attempting to apprehend inmates and others attempting to escape from the prison.
The Police Spokesman added that the prison authorities had used their minimum force to control the heat and that the inmates had set fire to several buildings including the archives and the kitchen.
